DNF: Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi

Everyone has already read and reviewed this, so I'm going to skip the blurb and go
straight for the jugular.

I really wanted to read and love this book and the two others in the trilogy. The author, whom I’ve seen around on various blogs and Instagram, is so damn cute!  I’ve heard so much about the third novel especially, and I just wanted to spend an entire weekend loving the series for everything it was.

Yeah, that didn’t happen.

Here's why:

Fucking strikethroughs.   Way too many fucking strikethroughs.  They’re on every page.

Deep ass sentences that mean nothing: “I hate the lackadaisical ennui of a sun too preoccupied with itself to notice the infinite hours we spend in its presence.”   U wot m8?

Sentences that are just poorly constructed and bad: “So much everything all the things dead.”

Purposeful lack of punctuation like it’s cute: “Two three four fifty thousand pieces of feeling stab me in the heart, melt into drops of warm honey that soothe the scars in my soul.”  (Also, what?)

Oh yeah, and the author never spells out numbers except for one time, which was referenced above for lacking commas.  She even begins sentences with numbers:  “2 knocks at the door and we’re both on our feet, abruptly startled back into this bleak world.”

Done.  I can’t do it. I quit after reading only 60 pages.

The plot and characters?  Not a problem.  The bad writing is what makes this a DNF.

  1. Now I'm beyond torn. I've had so many people go blue in this face whenever they tell me how awesome this series is. But now... I'm honestly afraid to start it. All of the things you mentioned will annoy me to no end. Well damn. I may try to start it tonight for the luls.

    1. Honestly, I think there really might be a good romance buried under all of the crap that I hated. I think if I would have pushed on a little more, I would have been rewarded. But the writer's style... oh man. It's an acquired taste, that's for sure. :)

  2. Hi Jackie, don't worry, I'm also one of those who heard amazing things about the Shatter Me trilogy and I couldn't continue after a couple of chapters. What got me was the metaphors. Oh, there was so many metaphors in that book. I still remember this one - These words are vomit. This shaky pen is my esophagus. This sheet of paper is my porcelain bowl.

Ugh. I'm so glad you also DNF this book either and was brave enough to stand up to the popular opinion and say it. Thanks for the honest review! :)

  4. Haha I totally get where you're coming from! The strikethroughs were very distracting to me too and I was sure I would hate it but after like halfway they actually wane off and become rare. But it is a very unique style pf writing that is a hit or miss for some. I remember when the book first came out it was pretty mixed reviews. Now you see all the rave because it's only fans of the first who are reading the 2nd and 3rd etc (in most cases). Hopefully your next book will be better!

    1. I did want to like this so much, and I didn't dislike the plot/characters, just the writing style. Maybe I'll do back to it when I'm feeling like less of a hater. :) Thanks for stopping by!

  5. It seems that your enjoyment really depends on whether you like the writing-style or not! I've seen a lot of people with the same complaints, but on the other hand a lot of people who seemed to love it. I don't know what I'm going to think, so I'm still interested to give it a shot :)

    1. Yeah -- I really do believe there was a good story buried under that distracting writing style. I can see why people liked it for sure.

  6. Oh no! I can't stand books written like this, especially the numbers thing. Your review has totally thrown me on whether to bother with this one, I've read so many good reviews! Also: I got your comment on my Weekly Wishlist and have sent you my email via Google + Hangouts. Let me know that you get it! :)

  7. I totally get where you are coming from, but for me it became a part of Juliette and I couldn't let go of her story.
